Let's be real: The 9 to 5 grind is tough! Having a dirty desk makes it even tougher. That's why it's crucial to make your cubicle, desk, register area, or whatever work space you use as joyful, comfortable, and calming as possible. This means keeping it cute, clean, and organized. Here are my top five tips for a tidy desk and cubicle.

Always use a coaster under your mug. Coffee rings are gross and can be hard to remove.

Stop eating at your desk. Okay, I realize this is impossible. Honestly, I probably eat something at my desk every day but I try to keep it at a minimum and at least get up for meals. Less desk dining means less cleaning up. It also means you'll be healthier due to less mindless snacking and getting more steps in to walk to a break room or cafeteria to eat lunch.

Pick a color story to make things look more cohesive and tidy.

Keep only the most useful and joy-sparking items in your work space. Everything in and around your desk should be serving your productivity.
What's useful and joy-sparking depends on your job, your unique values, and your personal style. Think about what makes you most productive when deciding what to keep, replace, or toss.

Keep important memos, manuals, and notes in a binder and/or in store in a incline vertical file sorter with decorative file folders.

Keep your favorite photos of your family and pets. Use magnets and frames to display them vertically.

Replace your boring stapler and tape dispenser with a stylish set, like this rose gold one.

Toss things that are literally trash like used disposable coffee cups and pens that don't work.

Toss things that are obsolete like printed office memos from last week and manuals for programs you are no longer using.

Keep items that you need but don't use repetitively throughout the day in desk drawers and on the shelves under your desk. Use small bins, hanging files, and (my favorite) up-cycled copy paper boxes and salad greens containers to keep storage organized.

Magnets can hold up everything from scissors and calendars to memorabilia and inspiring art.

Miscellaneous items stored under my desk: lunch warmer, eating utensils, cleaning supplies, toiletries, gym stuff, and snacks.

Keep one favorite reusable coffee mug, plus one big reusable water bottle/ carafe/ glass at your desk. (Bonus points for keeping a re-usable straw at your desk too.) This will keep you from littering your desk with multiple dirty disposables. It is also likely to keep you enthusiastic about staying hydrated. It's a good idea to keep a personal sponge or bottle brush and dish detergent handy too, so that you can minimize exposure to germs on the communal office sponge.

Do a weekly deep cleaning of your cubicle on Friday afternoons.

Turn off your computer or disconnect the mouse and keyboard.

Use canned air to clean your keyboard. Attach the little straw to the nozzle of the canned air. Hold the keyboard over a wastebasket and blow crumbs and debris out from between the keys.

Dust the top/ledge of the cubicle with paper towels or a dusting cloth. (You'd be surprised by how much dust collects there!)

Work your way down to dust the top of your computer monitor and then the desk top. Be sure to get behind your monitor and phone. Dust the objects on the desk too. (This is the moment where you will be most grateful to yourself for not keeping a lot of stuff on your desk.)

Use natural disinfecting cleaning wipes or an eco-friendly cloth and all-purpose cleaning spray to clean the desk top, keyboard, mouse, mouse pad, headphones, phone, stapler, coaster, and anything else you touch regularly. If your monitor is dirty, use an electronics cloth and a screen cleaner to clean that. (Do not put all purpose spray or cleaning wipes on your monitor!)

If you keep snacks in your cubicle or in the work fridge, toss out old food or take home things that might expire over the weekend.

I know this sounds like a lot but if you do it regularly and keep cleaning supplies at your desk it should only take about 10 minutes. It's very important to do this on Friday afternoons because encountering a clean space really makes a big difference for your productivity and general joy on Monday mornings.

It took me less than a minute to take this mug from "Yuck" to "Yes" using baking soda and water.

First, I sprinkled some baking soda inside the mug and added a few drops of water to make a paste. The baking soda to ratio water I used was probably 1:1, so about 1/2 Tbs baking soda and the same amount of water. It's best to start off with less water then add more as needed.

Next, I scrubbed the mug with my fingers for 30 seconds. A damp sponge or cloth probably would've been useful and faster but I just used what I had on hand. (See what I did there? š)

Finally, I rinsed the baking soda from the mug with water.

All done!

Seven years ago, I showed you guys how to remove balls of fuzz and lint from a sweater using a pumice stone. It's gets the job done but I notice it takes off a lot of yarn and leaves a wispy halo of upset fabric on the garment. For this reason, I have been hesitant to use this method frequently.

I was excited to discover Gleener de-piller at Vogue Knitting Live. It's (self-) described as the "The Ultimate Fabric Shaver and Lint Remover". Ok, "excited" might be an exaggeration, as I was a little put off by the $20 price tag. Gleener is a plastic hand-held tool that has a fabric shaver on one end and a lint brush on the other. Should a hunk of plastic cost $20?

Months later I looked (like really, looked) at a beloved cable knit sweater. It was truly natty and unwearable but thought of dragging a crude pumice stone across this precious object made me anxious. A few days after that, deep in the bowels of my accessory drawer, I found an expensive hand-knit scarf covered in huge, disgusting fuzz balls. I hadn't worn it in years, probably because it was so gross. The Universe was telling me to invest in Gleener so that I could enjoy the nice things I already had, which is basically like saving money. I ordered a deluxe set that came with replacement "edges" (shavers) and a cute travel case.

The Gleener was pretty easy to use. I just popped on Edge 1. The instructions said that would be best for the large fuzz on my chunky knit of my sweater. (Edge 2 is for finer knits like merino or fleece. Edge 3 is for ultra fine fabrics like t-shirts and silk.) I spread the sweater out on an ironing board. Then I moved the Gleener across the sweater using a firm grip and gentle strokes. Using Gleener didn't seem faster than using a pumice stone, as I worked very carefully. On the bright side, it is large and has an ergonomic design which makes it much easier and more comfortable to hold than a pumice stone. I used the lint remover side to finish the process.

I was impressed with results I was able to achieve with Gleener. It renewed my scarf and sweater! And there's no halo of wispy fibers! The photos show all the lint/fuzz that was removed in the de-pilling process. Not too bad.

I think Gleener was worth the $20. Does the world need another single-purpose hunk of plastic? That's a more complicated question to which the answer is most likely "no". Maybe one day Gleener will be made from recycled plastic like Preserve toothbrushes. In the meantime, I'm glad this tool is helping people to get more use and enjoyment out of their clothing before sending it to a landfill or to be recycled.
[Review]

I love my Miele Compact Canister Vacuum. It's easy to move around. It sucks up practically every manner of debris and species of dust bunny thanks to its wonderful suction and various attachments. I can break it down into three parts for easy storage in my crowded closet. I've had my Miele for almost ten years and view it as one of the wisest purchases I've made. Whenever I go to someone's home and see they also have a Miele, I know we belong to the same tribe to savvy clean enthusiasts.

Yes, the Miele vacuum is amazing but there is one thing it can't do: It can't turn itself on and vacuum. This is why even if you have a fancypants vacuum that you love, you probably want a Roomba. But should you buy one?

Sadly, I don't have a Roomba so I can't advise if you should buy one. However, I was gifted an Ecovacs Deebot a few years ago. Ecovacs Deebot is an alternative brand of robotic vacuum that cost half the price of a Roomba. Deebots have a 4-star rating on Amazon just like Roombas too.

Should you buy a Deebot? Eh, depends.

If it's important for you to have your floor vacuumed and you can't/won't do it but a housecleaner isn't in your budget, then you should absolutely get yourself a Deebot. If that's not your only concern, here are a few things you should know before investing in a robot vacuum.

You have to do a lot of prep work to make it safe for the Deebot to vacuum. You have to pick up any cords that the Deebot could get tangled in. You may have to move furniture like chairs that Deebot could get stuck between the legs of. You must make sure there's nothing on the floor that is valuable and can be knocked over or sucked up. You've got to pick up the pet dishes so Deebot doesn't crash into them and make a mess. You absolutely need to make sure that one of your pets hasn't pooped, peed, or vomited, otherwise the robot could spread the mess all over the floor.

I've never felt comfortable auto-scheduling the device or turning it on from the app while I was out. I only use the Deebot while I'm home to supervise. I first pick up any hazards, then I let the Deebot run while I do other stuff like clean the bathroom and kitchen surfaces or declutter. All the while, I have to stay alert and listen to make sure the Deebot is not caught on something.

Another downside is the Deebot takes a relatively long time to vacuum. I can do a detailed vacuum of my small apartment in about 30 minutes with my Miele. When I use the Deebot, I need to spend five to ten minutes prepping the space and allow about an hour or longer for it to finish sweeping. If I'm in a rush because I've got visitors coming with short notice, that's time I may not have.

The upside is that the Deebot does a truly thorough job of sweeping both hardwood floors and carpeted areas. I'm most impressed by how well it sweeps under the bed, which is an area that's kind of awkward for my Miele to access. However, the Deebot can only sweep the floor. It can't pull out special attachments to suck up cobwebs in a corner, lure dust bunnies from narrow crevices, or remove cat hair from the couch. I still need to occasionally spot clean with the Miele to keep things under control.

All these things considered, the Ecovacs Deebot is a worthwhile purchase (or in my case, a great gift to receive). No, it hasn't provided the freedom I anticipated. Yes, it's an inconvenience to have to babysit it. Ultimately, though, Deebot saves me time by allowing me to do other things while the floor is being vacuumed. It comes with a 1 year warranty so if it breaks after 12 months, it costs $11.25 a month to use. Cheaper than hiring a housecleaner for one hour! I've had my Deebot for three years, so if your device lasts as long that's just $3.75/month!

There is a newer version of Deebot and perhaps it is smarter and less likely to get caught on cords or go in messes than the now antiquated Ecovacs Deebot N79 I own. I hope so!

Do you have a Deebot or a Roomba? Do you think it's worth buying? Let me know your experience with the device in the comments.

I had an abdominal hysterectomy on Valentine's Day. The recovery time for the surgery is six weeks consisting of a few nights in the hospital and then resting at home. I wasn't in much pain by the time I left the hospital, but I couldn't just go back to life as usual. Here are a few things that helped me feel more comfortable during recovery from surgery.

Maternity Panties: Your tummy is going to swell a lot. Plus, I found that the elastic waistband of my normal bikini briefs hit exactly at the incision spot, making them impossible to wear. Ask your nurse to hook you up with extra pairs of the mesh maternity panties before you are discharged. (You can also buy more mesh panties on Amazon.) They expand to accommodate the swelling and are incredibly comfortable.

Modeling mesh maternity panties during my second night at the hospital.

Pill box: At times, you may not feel very clear headed so you or a family member will need to prep your pain meds so that you avoid overdose. I used four sandwich baggies and labelled each with the time I was supposed to take the dosage it contained. If you need something child and pet proof, this 7 day, 4 times a day pill box seems perfect. You could also cram the baggies of meds in one child-proof pill bottle which you can probably get for free from your friendly pharmacist.

Pantyliners: These come in handy when experiencing light spotting and when confronted with the reality that you are moving slowly and can't make it to the restroom as quickly you could before surgery. Seventh Generation Pantiliners are a good choice since they're made without fragrances, deodorants, or chlorine processing.

Laxative: Anesthetics, pain relief meds, and not being able to walk much will constipate you. I've been drinking a cup of Traditional Medicinals Organic Smooth Move Tea each night before bed to get back on track. Small smoothies with greens and flax seeds (or a half scoop of fiber-rich vegan protein powder) thrown in are also really helpful, as are prunes.

Water bottle: It's important to stay hydrated when healing. Once I woke up from a nap and saw my cat Lucy drinking out of my water glass, I realized it was also important to use something with a lid. I love using this tumbler because the straw makes it easy to drink while reclining.

Throw Pillow: Place a small pillow or a stuffed animal on your lap when sitting and over your midsection (over the blankets) when sleeping. I did this and it kept my big lap cat Patrick from jumping onto my sore incision site. He's been respecting the boundary and cuddles up against my legs or in my armpit instead. Holding the pillow against you when you laugh, cough, or sneeze is supposed to stop it from hurting. That didn't really work for me--I almost split open watching SNL-- but it's worth trying.

Cozy Robe: Eventually the nurse will make you walk a bit down the halls of the hospital. Call ahead to see if your hospital provides robes. If not, pack a cozy robe or a long sweater in your hospital bag. Otherwise your mesh panty covered backside will totally be exposed in your hospital gown. Yikes!

Comfortable loose and/or stretchy clothes: You need clothing to accommodate your swollen tummy. I've been pairing Kuhl Mova pants (which feel like PJs but look like skinny jeans) with loose tunic tops. I've also been wearing Hue sweater tights (because they do not have a control top) under shift dresses. These are things I already owned. If you don't own anything that would expand to fit comfortably, check out thredUp. ThredUp is the largest online consignment and thrift store. There you can easily find new, like new, and gently-used popular brand clothing up to 90% off retail. (I reviewed it here.)

Sleep Mask: It's important to get plenty of sleep so that your body can heal while you're resting. This means you'll find yourself doing lots of day napping. A sleep mask and earplugs make the quality of sleep better.

Napping with Patrick. Pillow on tummy. Earplugs and pills nearby.

Step stool (or something like that): If your bed isn't under your butt when you stand up next to it, you'll need a little boost to get in and out of bed properly. I'm using a stack of two cork yoga blocks that I already had.

3 Totally Unnecessary Things That Will Make Absolutely Make You More Comfortable After A Hysterectomy

Free Movie, TV, and Audio Book Streaming Memberships:
Start your free 30-Day trial of Amazon Prime now, if you aren't already a member. This way you can binge watch thousands of movies & TV shows, plus get FREE Two-Day Shipping on millions of items.

With Prime, you can add free 7-Day trials of Prime Video channels like Showtime and HBO. I'm trying out HBO so that I can finally see all the episodes of Insecure and Divorce.

Audible offers a free 30-Day Trial so that you can experience the world's largest selection of digital audiobooks and spoken word content. Audible is perfect for when you are awake at odd times because of day napping but don't want to disturb your partner with the lights of the TV.

Libby is my favorite app for borrowing audiobooks from the public library. It's super easy to use and getting started is fast and free. (No credit card needed!) Just be sure to sign up for a library card before your surgery! You can also check out e-books on Libby, but I've been too tired to read.
<strike></strike>
Robot vacuum: Up to six weeks after surgery, you're supposed to be taking it easy and not lift more than 10 pounds, which rules out hauling a vacuum across your home. Unfortunately, the pets are still shedding and crumbs are still falling. A dirty home stresses me out and stress is not conductive to healing. I let my Deebot robot vacuum take my troubles away! You can get a certified refurbished Deebot for under $100.

Glasses (instead of contact lenses): I totally regret not getting prescription glasses before my surgery. Multiple times a day, I experience the gross feeling of lenses sticking to my eyeballs after I fall asleep in them. If you wear contacts, do yourself a favor and get a pair of glasses. Glasses at Fetch Eyewear start at $95 and 100% of their profits go to animal welfare. Wear those to the hospital and wear those around the house while you recover.

Have you had an abdominal hysterectomy? What would you add to this list? Please share in the comments. If you or someone you love is considering having the surgery feel free to ask me questions about it too. I'm happy to answer!
In that episode Morgan and his fiancƩe Alex lived the life of folks who earn minimum wage for a month. Between the two of them, they had three full time jobs as unskilled laborers, yet they barely earned enough to both buy groceries and pay rent for an unfurnished, ant infested apartment in a former crack den. Not only were they needy for material goods, their physical health and relationship suffered.

Morgan Spurlock clocks in (via 30 Days: Minimum Wage)

This got me wondering: Is hard work bad for you? In this case, it was certainly not benefiting Morgan and Alex's lives. They were indisputably working hard but had a standard of life that begs one to question if a stay in prison might be better. At least there they'd be assured three meals and health care.

I'm not advocating against work. Wasting time, energy, and talents is great way to be hungry, sick, and sad too. However, I can't help but wonder why those who work the hardest suffer the most. Is it strictly due to the failure of our government? Are corporations and employers to blame? How does this relate to Law of Attraction? Are minimum wage workers attracting struggle and suffering themselves or is it a manifestation of causes we've made as a society?

I feel overwhelmed by the size and complexity of the problem, but I also believe we need to solve it together. Every human deserves to live in a safe home and have access to health care and food, regardless of whether they work as a hedge fund manager or as a dishwasher.
Less than a month later, the spout-- along with my heart-- broke when I swung it into our countertop in a moment of absentmindedness.

The thought of tossing this fancy new kettle into a dumpster made me sad, while the thought of drinking tea made with hot water that passed through a spout covered in potentially toxic glue gave me the heebee geebees. Determined to repair it safely, I did some research to find a glue that:

wouldn't poison me when it leached into water as it passed through the spout

would create a bond that could handle the heat of boiling water

would create a waterproof seal

In short, I needed strong, durable, nontoxic and food-safe glue.

I found DAP 00688 Household Waterproof Adhesive Sealant. It's a 100% silicone glue that is food grade and costs less than $5.

I followed these simple instructions.

Make sure kettle and the broken off piece(s) are clean and dry.

Set up a work area so you don't make a mess. Old newspaper does the trick.

Apply a small amount of glue to one surface.

Press the glue covered surface into the surface you want to bind it to.

Wipe or scrape away excess glue that might have been squeezed out when you pressed the pieces together. I used a scrap of paperboard I had lying around, but you could probably use a cloth or a straight edge. Don't get glue on anything you aren't willing to throw away because dried glue can only be removed from objects with mineral spirits (sadly, toxic). On the bright side, the glue does dry clear so you could just leave it.

Press glued pieces together for five minutes.

Wash your hands with soap and water if you have glue on them.

Allow kettle to cure for 24 hours. (Cure is repair lingo for "leave it alone".)

A month later, my kettle is still in one piece and I'm enjoying lots of tea and coffee!

There is one small chip missing but I chucked it figuring I just needed to focus on getting the larger part of the spout back on. The right person probably could've gotten it back together perfectly. However, I am blissfully not a perfectionist and love that it took me only 6 minutes to do this repair job!
You could use DAP silicone glue to repair your beloved broken mugs, bowls, teapots, ceramic baking dishes and coffee dripper... even a fish tank!
Looking for a fun way to expand both your collection of recipes and your network of neighborhood friends? You should create or join a cookbook club!

A cookbook club is essentially a hybrid of a book club and a potluck. Periodically, the group chooses a cookbook and each member selects one recipe from the book to cook and share at the next meeting. During the meeting, members discuss their opinions and experiences using the cookbook over a potluck meal.

Last May, I was inspired by an article on thekitchn.com to start a vegan cookbook club here in Hastings on Hudson. In just a few months, the club has become quite popular. Over a dozen couples participated in our most recent meeting!

We are learning healthy, novel, and ethnically diverse ways of preparing food. We are making new friends with people who just moved to town, while also getting to know our long-time neighbors better. We are having long, interesting conversations and sharing resources about more than just food. We are talking about childcare, relationships, local politics, business openings, our new projects, local services, etc. All the kind of stuff you that makes it easier and more fun to live in a community.

I think every town could benefit from a cookbook club. If you can't find an existing club near you, here's how you can easily start one in your community.

See if there's interest.
Throw out the idea of a vegan cookbook club to your friends-- either on social media or in person. Once you have even four friends excited and willing to come to the first meeting, you've got a platform.

Invite people to join the club.
To keep it intimate, create a private Facebook group. Add friends who said they're interested in the club. Ask those excited friends to add their friends. (It's polite to get a friend's permission before adding them to the FB group.) If your crowd is not on Facebook, use Google Groups to connect members over email instead.

Don't just invite vegans and vegetarians. Invite folks who are veg-curious, interested in cooking, wanna get healthy, or just love to socialize. Our group includes people with all kinds of dietary preferences.

To open the group to complete strangers (instead of just friends and friends-of-friends), create a public Facebook group or a Meetup group. For your safetly, do not do this if meetings are going to be held in member's homes! Contact a local library, church, gallery, or community center to see if they'd be willing to let you use their space for meetings. Use Canva to make printable flyers and web images to promote the group, then post them around town (library, post office, cafe, church, laundromat, supermarket, yoga studio, etc) and online.

Create your first meeting.
Once you've promoted the group and got a good base of interested people, it's time to create the first meeting. To create a meeting, you need to choose three things:

a cookbook to focus on (Check out my list of 24 of the Best Vegan Cookbooks of 2016 for inspiration.)

a time

a place

As the organizer of the group, you should be prepared and open to the idea of hosting the first meeting, either at your home or in a public venue.

You could be super democratic and try to choose a book, time, and place that suits all or a majority of members. Facebook lets you post polls on your group page, so that'd be a good way to manage those tasks. Outside of Facebook, you can poll members using Doodle to schedule a time.

The Hastings on Hudson Vegan Cookbook Club has lots of members with different schedules (single people, SAHM, professionals who commute into the city, etc) so we don't do that. Any member can volunteer to host a meeting, which gives her the option to pick the book and host it in her home when it's convenient for her. We also let each host decide if kids and/or spouses are welcome. (The default is No Kids for obvious reasons.)

We have conversations on the group page about cookbooks we're excited about, which makes it easier for the host to choose. We also try to only choose books that are available at the public library for those of us who want to save money and shelf space (and only invest in books once we know we can't live without them, which is something that this book club helps you figure out).

Books our club has focused on include: The Oh She Glows Cookbook, Chloe's Vegan Italian Kitchen, and Vegan World Fusion Cuisine.

Instead of a cookbook, you can also choose a theme. The theme of our first meeting was simple: Favorite Vegan Cookbook. Everyone brought their go-to vegan cookbook and a dish prepared from a recipe in the book. In October, the meeting theme was Fall Favorites. Themes are a good way to be exposed to a wider variety of cookbooks. Another twist is to choose a vegan blog to cook recipes from. When we hosted the Oh She Glows potluck, people made recipes from the book, the blog, and the app.

Once you've got all that sorted out, create a Facebook event for your group or send the details out to your email group. If you're using FB, it helps to tag members in a post on the event page, so that they don't miss it.

Prepare for the meeting.
Host puts out beverages, dining ware, napkins, etc. (A buffet server, warming tray, and/or crock-pot, are useful for keeping food warm so definitely put that stuff out if you have it.) The host also makes a copy of the featured cookbook available for guests to refer to during the meeting.

Creating dining room for a large group can be a challenge in a small space, but it's totally possible. Check out these 15 tips for hosting a dinner party in a small apartment.

Each guest or couple brings a dish and a serving utensil. It's also helpful to bring some way to label/display what the dish is. (You could use an official food display sign or just fold an index card in half to create a sign.) Bring eco-friendly containers for leftovers too ;-)

Enjoy the meeting.
Guests set up their dishes together in the kitchen when they arrive. Once everyone is there, people introduce themselves and say what they brought. Everyone makes a plate. People sit together to eat, talk about the book, talk about cooking, and get to know each other better. It's really fun!

Plan the next meeting.
During or right after a meeting is the best time to pick a book and inspire someone to host the next meeting. Aim to have at least one meeting each month, but don't be too rigid. Pick a frequency that works for your group to maximize fun and minimize burnout.

Did you know that you can juice a sweet potato? You can! The terrific tubers make a juice that is both creamy and mildly sweet. Make the following recipe the next time you get a sugar craving or just want to try something new.
It's a good book to have on your shelf, whether you simple wish to follow a recipe or want a solid foundation on which to build a vegan dish with your creative accent.

This omelette was inspired by a CSA-induced surplus of cabbage and unwieldy scallions, as well as a bottle of this flavorful Asian stir fry oil that is infused with fried onions, garlic, and ginger. However, I adapted the recipe below so that you can make it without that specific oil. (If you have the oil, you're free to omit the ginger and garlic.) If you don't have napa cabbage, use bok choy as a substitute.

Add cabbage stems first to soften them up a bit. Then add cabbage greens and half the red pepper flakes. Stir occasionally. Add oil as needed. Cook until wilted (about 4 minutes).

Transfer veggies stir fry to a bowl. Add soy sauce.

In another bowl, beat egg with salt and the rest of the red pepper.

Turn heat below pan to medium. Coat with 1 tsp oil.

Pour egg into pan. Allow it to spread and cover entire bottom of pan. Cook on low until tiny bubbles appear on egg surface and it seems mostly cooked.

Spoon half of the stir fry veggies onto one half of the eggs.

Fold other half of eggs over to cover veggies. Cook for thirty seconds more.

Flip carefully and cook for another 30 seconds on the other side.

Slide omelette onto plate with rest of veggies. Enjoy alone or with a side of rice. Season with Sriracha, as desired.

*I don't like the taste of scrambled eggs, but love the way eggs make me feel. If you're the same, use just one egg and don't skip the Sriracha.
Have you tried kohlrabi yet? It's the texture of broccoli stems and has a mild, slightly sweet flavor. I love it sauteed with other veggies, but it's also yummy raw and really shines in this coleslaw. This unique and impressive simple slaw is a great vegan and vegetarian dish to serve at your BBQ or picnic.

One day I ran out of my beloved Alaffia shampoo. I figured I'd try the No-Poo method before replacing the bottle. No-Poo method simply means washing your hair without shampoo and using just water, conditioner, or baking soda instead.

Why No-Poo? Many people find that shampoo leaves hair dry and frizzy, especially curly and kinky hair. Personally, I've never experienced this. I think it's because I don't wash my hair as often as most people do. I wash my hair once a week in the summer and sometimes just once a month in the winter. If it feels un-fresh in between, I just rinse and scrub with water. Why waste time removing the naturally perfect oils in my hair just to replace them with products that don't work as well?

It's been over 2 years and I have yet to buy shampoo. I love washing my hair with baking soda! It gets my hair at least as clean as shampoo. It might even be cleaner because baking soda is much easier to rinse out. Plus, there's no plastic bottle to recycle, no ingredients to investigate for safety, and each cleaning cost just pennies.

Here's how to clean your hair with baking soda instead of shampoo:

Before getting in the shower, put at least 1 heaping tablespoon of baking soda in a small bowl or teacup. In very small increments, add enough water to make a thin paste.

Get in shower. Rinse hair.

Apply baking soda paste to hair-- the closer to the scalp, the better. If you have very thick and/or kinky hair like me, I recommend washing hair in sections to prevent tangling.

Massage paste into scalp then work you fingers down to the ends of your hair.

Rinse, condition, and style hair as usual. Pay extra attention to your ears when rinsing, as I've noticed baking soda likes to collect in the nooks and crannies of my ears!

Sometimes I perform a slightly more elaborate baking soda hair wash and followed by a vinegar and herbal rinse. (Detailed here).

Homemade lip balm: Made in re-used tube from Mongo Kiss organic peppermint lip balm (which is exceptionally good lip balm, better than my own, but mine is pretty good too and costs less than 50 cents to make) because I'm thrifty like that and because I love their chubby lip balm tubes.

Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Liquid Castile Soap: I carry this because my hands break out in a rash and become painfully irritated and cracked if I use random soap in restrooms, especially anti-bacterial soap. I keep it in a repurposed glass dropper tube so it's easier to travel with and use.

Alaffia Everyday Coconut Super Hydrating Body Lotion: I love this! It absorbs and moisturizes my skin so fast without leaving behind anything oily. I have a huge bottle of this so I travel with some in an repurposed spice jar.

The Honest Company Hand Sanitizer Spray: I prefer to wash my hands to clean them but sometimes that's not possible, so I love using this all natural hand sanitizer because it doesn't try out or irritate my hands.

Once you drop your menstrual cup into a public toilet you kinda wanna be really careful afterwards. Yes, this happened to me. Yes, I fished it out. Fortunately, it was a staff bathroom so not that bad, but still pretty gross.

Dry brushing is exactly what it sounds like. It's literally brushing your body without using any oil, butters, or other moisturizer.

Why dry brush? My first experience with the holistic skin care ritual proved that it makes your skin smoother and softer almost instantly. I felt it removed much more dead skin cells than using a brush (or even my beloved exfoliating gloves) in the shower.

In short: Dry brushing keeps you from being ashy.

It's also supposed to be really good for supporting your body's natural detoxification system. Refinery 29 reports on dry brushing:

According to aesthetician Susan Ciminelli, dry brushing increases the circulation of lymphatic fluid and blood flow.
It helps circulate nutrients through the body as well as waste, helping
to take pressure off the kidneys to regulate the amount of water in the
body. Excess water is secreted, and Ciminelli even claims that it
"helps to keep the layer of fat under the skin's surface very thin. The
thinner that layer of fat, the easier it is for the body to excrete
toxins through the skin."

I also love how dry brushing makes me feel warm and energized. If you often crave a good back scratch like I do, you're gonna really enjoy dry brushing.

How exactly does one dry brush? Is there a specific way to do it?

First, pick a good brush. A natural brush is best. I chose this vegan body brush made with Japanese palm. It's a nice alternative to rubbing pig hair or fake plastic bristles all over my body.

Hop into the shower or tub, without water running. Start at your ankles and brush up towards your heart. Once you get to your mid section, brush towards your belly button and up to your heart, moving from the back to your front. Lift your arms over your head and brush down toward your heart. That's it.

(If you wanna <strike>be neurotic about</strike> perfect your dry brushing method, check out Green Smoothie Girl's Skin Brushing 101 Guide which has a video and a helpful infographic.)

Clean your brush once a week by soaking it in a bowl of water with some white vinegar. Air dry, in a sunny spot if possible.

Do you love dry brushing too?

If you've ever used your coffee grinder to grind whole spices, you know how gross your next cup of coffee can be if you don't clean it out well enough before you use it again. But do you know the easiest and most effective way to do it?

Here's the best way to clean your coffee grinder after grinding spices:

Quickly wipe the inside of the spice grinder and the top with a slightly damp cloth or sponge.

Put about 2 Tbsp of the cheapest (uncooked) rice you own into the spice grinder.

Grind the rice until it becomes a flour.

Toss the flour, then wipe the grinder again with a clean, damp cloth. (I would just use a different corner of the same cloth used in step 1.)

Do this and you'll have fresh coffee and perfect spice blends every time. Yay for coffee that doesn't taste like curry! Hooray for curry that doesn't taste like Chinese Five Spice!

Do you grind your own spices? If not, did you know making your own spice blends is a great way to save money and get the best flavor? Check out the top 50 spice mix recipes.

The Balance Project is a recurring interview series that features fun, brief, relevant, informative, and refreshingly candid interviews with inspiring and accomplished women who are in the midst of trying to balance work, life, and, for some, kids as well.

Writer Susie Schnall has published over 100 interviews so far! A few of my favorites are those with entrepreneurs including Sara Blakely who founded SPANX, Anita Shepherd who founded Anitaās Yogurt (it's made in Brooklyn and vegan), and Institute for Integrative Nutrition grad Adina Grigore who founded S.W. Basics (a super natural skincare line, also made in Brooklyn).

The project ties into one of the main themes of Susie's first novel On Grace as the main character tries to find her own balance upon turning 40 and re-entering the work force. Itās also the theme of her second novel The Balance Project: A Novel which was inspired by the interview series and has been called The Devil Wears Prada meets a fictional Lean In.

Joshua Rosenthal, founder and director of IIN (and author of the book) explains why this book is special:

You might be wondering... āI have so many cookbooks. Why do I need this one?ā

Iāve spent 30 years in the nutrition world, and noticed one major challenge: recipe books often over-complicate.

Cooking has been glamorized on TV with shows like Chopped, Iron Chef, and Cutthroat Kitchen. But just because youāve never cooked āsous videā salmon or learned to āchiffonadeā basil doesnāt mean that you canāt make delicious, wholesome meals that will make you feel nourished and satisfied.

Weāve all tried a ā15-minute recipeā only to have it take an hour. And donāt get me started on how many pots and pans some recipes require!

Youāre not alone ā this happens all the time.

So let me help you un-complicate cooking once and for all!

My cookbook will help youā¦

create dishes that not only taste amazing, but make your body feel amazing too

get comfortable in the kitchen so you can develop simple recipes on your own

infuse love and healing into all your food

Today, Iām inviting you to download my e-book - which has a cover price of $16.99 -for only 99 cents.

Sounds exciting huh?

Based on my experience in Integrative Nutrition's Health Coach Training Program, Joshua is an amazing teacher and the person I'd want to learn how to cook from if I was just getting in the kitchen. Heck, I'm excited to learn from him now and I've been cooking for 30 years! That's why I literally just bought the book on Amazon then ran to share this awesome deal with you before the 99 cents offer ends. Hope you can snag a copy!

Now, I'm off to read it and plan to fit a recipe or two into my menu for this upcoming week! :-)
Plus, since you can make a big pot of soup using inexpensive, (mostly) unprocessed whole foods, vegan soups can help you to save money on groceries and take out while you spend less time cooking.
I love vegan soup so much I created the 21 Day Vegan Soup Challenge. Every February I lead a group though the challenge. You can also do the challenge on your own at any time of the year. (Click here for details and registration.)

The first day of the 2016 guided group challenge is Sunday, February 7, 2016. The last day of the guided group challenge is Saturday, February 27, 2016.

Here are recipes I featured during last year's challenge. They were selected because they all include nutrient-dense whole foods. Many also include orange root veggies, healthy fats, and protein-- three important factors in reducing cravings for unhealthy sweets.

One of my favorite things about the 21 Day Vegan Soup Challenge is the bestovers (that's what I call leftovers). Personally, I could eat the same yummy thing every day. However, if you like variety it's a good idea to cook two or three pots of soup each week during the challenge. This means you're likely to have leftovers.

Freezing soup is the best way to deal with leftovers. Most vegan soups will still taste fine when thawed and enjoyed after 6 months. Here are some tips for freezing soup and ideas for what to do when you have no freezer space or hate leftovers.

General Tips for Freezing Soups

Soups that freeze best: Bean soups, vegetable soups, broth-based soups, soups with brown rice or wild rice, and pureed soups.

Donāt freeze herbs in soup. Just add them to reheated soup.

You can, however, freeze herbs like cilantro and parsley separately: Wash and dry. Chop in food processor. Pour in olive oil as it processes. Freeze in ice cube tray or in freezer bag. (More details here.)

Donāt freeze cooked pasta. Instead, boil fresh pasta and add this directly to the reheated soup.

Slightly undercook vegetables, especially potatoes. If you're making some soup to eat now and some to freeze, scoop out/put aside the portion of soup you plan on freezing before finishing/fully cooking the soup you plan to eat.

Freeze in quarts or in single portion sizes. This makes it easier to tote to work, store in the freezer, and reheat.

How to Freeze Soup

Cool. Cool soup before putting it in the fridge or freezer. Remove the lid and take off the stovetop. Stir soup often to help release the heat. You can speed up the cooling process by placing the pot of soup in a bath of ice water in the sink.

Package. Label and date quart-size zip-top plastic freezer bags, place in a bowl, and cuff the bag over the edge. Ladle soup into each bag, then let out any excess air and seal. To avoid using plastic, ladle into wide mouth mason jars. Leave 1ā- 2ā of space to give soup room to expand when it freezes. Otherwise the jar will break.

Freeze. Lay bags flat in a single layer in the freezer; when frozen, stack bags to save space. Stack jars in freezer.

How to Reheat Frozen Soup

Thaw overnight in fridge. Put a dish towel or bowl under the soup as it thaws.

Reheat gently over low to medium-low heat in a pot. (Don't boil.)

Stir occasionally.

Enjoy!

No Freezer Space? Low Tolerance for Leftovers? No Problem.

Find a soup sister (or brother). Cook and share soup on alternating weeks.

Organize a soup swap with your neighbors. The more swappers, the more variety.

Stick some soup in the freezer at work. Have it for a healthy lunch on days when you forget to pack one!

Host a potluck. You provide the soup. Have guests bring over dishes that go well with soup or just ingredients for the salad.

How do you feel about leftovers? Love 'em or hate 'em?
