5 Ways to Overcome Procrastination

Cleaning is one of those things people love to put off. Unfortunately, if you put off cleaning long enough you'll have a real off-putting mess on your hands. Here are my favorite ways to nip procrastination for cleaning, and anything else, in the bud.

Become best friends with your planner.
I put almost everything in my planner. I don't put a specific time, but I assign either a day or time of day to perform household and personal tasks. This way they're not just swimming around like hungry, scary sharks in the overwhelming sea of things I'm responsible for. Think about it: Most people hate their jobs at least as much as they hate cleaning, but they manage to make it in to work because they've fit it into their schedule. The same is true for stuff at home.

Ask yourself why it's important that you do the task you're putting off.
This might reignite the fire under your ass and inspire you to perform the task. On the other hand, you may realize that the task doesn't need to be done or that you can outsource it. Either outcome is totally acceptable!

Do a small portion of the chore.
If it's possible to break the project or task down into smaller bits, do that. For example, if you're putting off cleaning out your fridge, decide to just toss out expired food from one shelf. You might find yourself cleaning way more than you had planned once you get started. An object in motion, stays in motion, right? If not, at least you've got part of the job done.

Don't be a perfectionist.
"Small deeds done are better than great deeds planned." -Peter Marshall. Set out to do things the best you can without driving yourself insane. I remind myself of this every single day.

Surrender to procrastination.
Your desire to procrastinate on a particular project might be a sign that other areas of your life need more attention. Ask yourself what you'd rather do be doing. What could you give yourself that would make you better able to perform tasks?
I find that fulfilling my desires makes it so much easier for me to get less desirable things done. I don't waste time avoiding deeper issues and both not doing what I'm supposed to do and not doing what I want to do. When I give myself what I need, my spirit feels honored and I'm empowered to take care of business like a boss!
Super Important: Be sure to reschedule a start time to begin any task you put off. Some things can't be rescheduled. In such cases, I always make a point to schedule time for fun in the near future.
