How to Make a Natural Car Air Freshener

Looking for an all natural, non toxic air freshener for your car?  You can make your own!

You'll need:
  • fabric (I used craft fur)
  • paperboard or paper
  • marker or fabric pencil
  • yarn
  • glue
  • hole puncher
  • scissors
  • essential oil(s)

Do this:
  1. Draw your desired shape of air freshener on the paperboard. I used a jar to trace a circle. Cut out your shape.
  2. Do the same thing with two pieces of fabric. Be sure to trace on the back so that you don't mark the side you'll be displaying.
  3. Punch a hole into the paper. Place the paper over the backside of the fabric. Make where the hole will go on the fabric. Snip a little hole. Repeat on the other piece of fabric.
  4. Sandwich the paper between the fabric pieces. String the yarn through the holes.
  5. Glue everything together.
  6. Wanna make a face for your freshener? Doodle eyes and a mouth on scrap paperboard and glue them on. I made a different face for each side.
  7. Add 10 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil(s) to each side of fabric. Be careful not to get the oil on your doodles, otherwise the ink will bleed.
  8. Let it air dry. I dried mine flat on top of the jar so that the oil wouldn't run onto my doodles.
  9. The freshener should stay fragrant for a few weeks. Add more oil when you need to.
  10. Do a happy dance cuz you've avoided cancer-causing toxins found in conventional car air fresheners.

I learned how to make this by reading How to Make Make a Non Toxic, Reuseable Air Freshener tutorial on WonderHowTo. It's got awesome illustrations by Yumi Sakuwaga.

Do you think you'll try making something like this?
