My Morning Ritual

I spend about 3 hours getting ready every morning. I know it sounds crazy, but I think starting the day by taking care of my body and spirit is what's keeps me sane, centered, and happy no matter what else happens later in the day.

Journaling in layers. This old house is cold in the morning!

 Here's my daily morning ritual:

  1. Drink Powerchug 2 pints of water.
  2. Read daily encouragement.
  3. Chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo. This is the most important thing I do all day!
  4. Drink warm water with apple cider vinegar.
  5. Give my fiance a big hug for being so dang loveable!
  6. Journal/ The Artist's Way Morning Pages.
  7. Make myself a warm breakfast like savory oatmeal or tofu scramble. I make a green smoothie if I'm short on time.
  8. Eat breakfast at the table, usually alone. No internet, no books. Just me and my delicious food.
  9. Go to the park to walk or run along the waterfront, pet dogs, then get on the swings. (I don't do this when it's cold and I know it's why I feel a little emo December to April.)
  10. Take a long, hot shower. (Honestly, I only do this every other day in cooler months.)
  11. Give myself a mini natural facial.
  12. Massage lotion, body butter, or coconut oil into my skin.
  13. Get dressed in something that totally expresses how I'm feeling.
If you don't have a morning ritual, I highly recommend developing one. Get inspiration from these HuffPo posts: The Simple Things You Should Be Doing Every Morning (but Aren't) and 5 Morning Rituals to Keep You Productive All Day Long.

In the later, ThredUp.com founder James Reinhart suggests picking three wins for the day:
Decide on the three things that you'd like to accomplish in the next 12 hours in order for you to feel like the day was a success. Sure, not every day will be an epic win, but strategizing in this way will help to move the ball forward.
I think I'm going to add that to my evening ritual. My mornings are kinda full!

Do you have a morning ritual? Are you thinking of creating one?

  1. That is great :) I also need three hours in the morning to get ready. And it does make a huge difference to the rest of the day!
Thanks for sharing - I really like to learn about other peoples daily routines, you can always learn something for yourself.

    My morning ritual:

go up at 5AM, take two tbsp oliveöl with a bit of lemon juice (great for detox :) )
go running with my dog for half an hour
then I take a big glas of warm/hot water with the juice of one fresh lemon.
Then it's shower-time with warm-cold showers (just great for blood circulation)
At around 7am I start Gongyo and chanting for one hour (that is what makes the biggest difference to my day - I always see that, when I slept in and cannot chant that long)

    That's it - then I go to work :)

    Warmly,
Ursula from Germany (who is determined becoming an IIN student soon :) )

  2. Hey Ursula! Happy New Year! Your morning ritual sounds fab. I am so with you on the one hour of daimoku in the morning. It's the best! My Buddhist friend Jane (who chants with me a few mornings a week) just started doing the evoo and lemon juice in AM too. I've have to try it now since you're saying it's great too. Is it necessary to do first thing in the morning or could I do it later in the day if I forget? Thanks. Hugs!
