Richard and I went to the Unsold Supper

Unsold Supper was the highlight of a Labor Day weekend spent in the city. The event was held in Union Square Park last Saturday and organized by OurGoods, a barter network for creatives, and The Greenhorns, a non-profit that supports young farmers. It was wonderful to witness so many people enjoying a free feast prepared by volunteers with unsold Greenmarket goods that were generously donated by the farmers. I was a bit overwhelmed (and confused) by the barter wall, but the display of random offerings of love and energy was beautiful. It was also fun to chat with people I admire but don't see enough of (including Anne Pope of Sustainable Flatbush and Dee-Dee of MoS Collective). Were you there? What did you think of the event?

Rainy Day Project: Clean Your Laptop

 Materials:
  • Solution of 1 part rubbing alcohol and 1 part filtered water-- about 2 oz of each should be enough, so start with that. This solution is great because alcohol is excellent at cutting stickiness and it dries quickly.
  • A lint-free cloth. E-cloth's glass cloth is a good choice.
  • Canned/ Compressed Air

Move In/ Move Out Green Cleaning

I'd love to help you settle into your new apartment! On top of all the exceptionally thorough basic cleaning services, I also offer the cleaning out of EMPTY: refrigerator, oven (yes, it can be cleaned without toxic products!), kitchen cabinets & drawers, bathroom cabinet, and closets. I can also dust and damp wipe ceiling fans, radiators, and accessible air vent covers.

Please contact me for an estimate.
Update: I no longer offer cleaning services.

I'm hosting a Vegan/ Animal Rights Book Swap to Benefit Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary

Thursday, August 11, 6-9pm, Sustainable NYC, 139 Avenue A (btw St. Marks & 9th St), New York, NY 10009

Calling all veggies and friends of animals with dusty, crowded book shelves! Please join us for an evening swap of inspiring vegan cookbooks, theory books, how-to dvds, and all other media related to vegetarianism and animal rights. This event is open to all whether you are a hardcore vegan with a dozen books (and tattoos) or a veg-curious passerby.

There will be a raffle in support of Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. (Prizes include a gift certificate to Sustainable NYC!) All books remaining after the swap will be donated to the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe.

As if scoring free books, helping rescued animals, and supporting New Yorkers living with AIDS isn't enough, we'll have lots of delicious flavors of Lula's Sweet Apothecary vegan ice cream for sale in the cafe and a 10% discount on all items in the shop during the event!

For more info or to contribute a prize to the raffle, contact: olivia@supervegan.com
(RSVP via Facebook)

Update:  Thanks to all twenty-or-so of you who came, chatted, swapped, bought raffle tickets, and threw a few bucks in the donation jar. We collected $62 and my sweet boyfriend made a matching donation, so we raised at total of $124 for Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary! I'm also enjoying the Teany Book I picked up. (I promise to share it or something equally awesome at the next swap.)

Get Dirty this Summer!

I just have to share info about this cool site: "Get Dirty NYC! is a newly-formed non profit whose mission is to connect New Yorkers to gardening and farming opportunities around the city. We've created a one-stop virtual meeting place for volunteers to find hands-on projects, and for farms and gardens to find the help they need. Please visit www.getdirtynyc.org if you're interested in volunteering or if you'd like to list your farm or garden project." (P.S. Follow @getdirtynyc on Twitter for up-to-the-minute announcements of gardening opportunities.)

5 Things to Do if You Hate Cleaning

Nordic Ware Microwave 10.5 Inch Spatter Cover
  1. Buy a microwave splatter cover and actually use it every time you place something in the microwave. Would you rather spend 30 seconds hand washing (or zero-time machine washing) a little cover every so often or at least 3 minutes prying off cheese, tomato sauce, and other gross stuff that's been baked into, or exploded onto, the walls of your microwave?
  2. Stop wearing your shoes in your apartment and leave dirt (and the city pavement's melange of chemicals and excrement) at the door.
  3. Keep your cutesy pie collectables in a curio. More things out mean more surfaces to dust. If you display things in a cabinet the items remain dust free and all you have to do is clean the glass occasionally. (Vertical surfaces collect less dust than horizontal surfaces.) You'll also lessen the chances of having to clean up a mess resulting from someone accidentally knocking over a glass or ceramic item.
  4. Keep your honey, agave, or other syrup jar in a little bowl or on a little plate. This will spare you from having to clean up the sticky mess from various spots on your table, which is way more annoying than cleaning a dish in my opinion.
  5. Hire me to clean for you!
Please comment with any other tricks you use to avoid having to do more cleaning than necessary.
