Create Abundance at Home #3: Junk Drawer Detox!

A big part of getting more awesomeness is making space for it. Let's start by creating physical space. Starting small is the most way fun to begin, so let's start with the junk drawer. It might be a junk box or junk pile or junk bag in your case, but I trust you'll recognize the catch-all, I'll-deal-with-it-later spot I'm talking about. The key is to clearly define your start and end point, or else you'll probably get overwhelmed or, even worse, not recognize the progress you've made.

Grab a trash bag, the recycling bin, a cardboard box labeled "Give Away Nov 10" (one week from now), and another box or bin labeled "keep". Pick each item up once. Spend 30 seconds or less to ruthlessly decide which box or bag to put it in. Let the simple question "Have I needed this in the past year?" guide you.

If you find stuff you needed in the past but thought was lost, consider moving it to a spot that makes more sense to you. I like to store things near where I'll be using them.

Put the "Give Away" box on your stoop and prepare to be amazed at how soon it will disappear! If you don't feel comfortable curbing things-- which means I'm jealous of how much free time you clearly have-- donate the items to charity, sell them on the internet, freecycle them, shoot 'em to the moon in a rocket, whatever. Just make sure they're out of your house by next Thursday, November 10th!

What did you get rid of? Wasn't it fun!
